Cruising on the Marne-Rhine Canal allows you to experience the highest lock in France, (16,38m) at Réchicourt. This example of modern canal engineering was completed in 1969 and replaces 17 locks.
Below the lift, the Marne-Rhine travels nearly three kilometres underground through two tunnels. The inclined plane at Arzviller, lifts boats 150 feet (45 meters) in just 20 minutes. In Lutzelbourg you will discover the glass and crystal workshops which have been there since the 17th century.
Another delight is arriving in Saverne, with its ducal palace. Your cruise takes you past the château at Rohan and offers a splendid view of castles in the area. |
